Hip hop or rap is a music genre that developed as part of hip hop culture, and is defined by four stylistic elements: MC, DJ / turntablism, sampling (or sound synthesis) and beatboxing. Hip hop began in the South Bronx of New York in the early 1970's.The term rap is often used synonymously with hip hop, hip hop but also refers to the practices of all the subculture
Origin of the Term
The creation of the term hip hop is often attributed to Keith Cowboy, a rapper who collaborated with Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. However, LovebugStarski, Keith Cowboy and DJ Hollywood used the term when the music was knownas a hard rap yet. It is believed that Cowboy created the term when he joked with a friend who had just enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces, by scat singing the words "hip/ hop / hip / hop" in a way that mimicked the rhythmic cadence of marching soldiers .Cowboy later developed the cadence of his rhymes "hip hop" as part of their live performance, which soon was used by other artists such as The Sugarhill Gang"Rapper's Delight".
Afrika Bambaataa, Universal Zulu Nation founder, is recognized as the first to use the term to describe a subculture that this music belonged. It has also been suggestedthat this was a term used pejoratively to refer to this style. The first use of the term was printed in The Village Voice, by Steven Hager, later author of a history of hip hopin 1984.
